Raiders (4-5) vs. Patriots (7-2)

- — Matt Kawahara

Where: Azteca Stadium in Mexico City When: 1:25 p.m. TV/Radio: / 95.7, 98.5 Spotlight on: Raiders QB Derek Carr. Let’s be realistic — the matchup of Tom Brady vs. Oakland’s pass defense does not favor the Raiders. It’s the Patriots’ defense, though, that ranks last in the league in both total and passing yards allowed. To borrow an old saying, the Raiders’ best defense Sunday might be a good offense — sustaining drives and keeping the ball out of Brady’s hands. Can Carr outduel one of the best ever? Injury notes: Raiders — CB David Amerson (foot) is doubtful. G Gabe Jackson (ankle), LB Cory James (knee), T Marshall Newhouse (hip/quad) and FB Jamize Olawale (hamstring) are questionable. Patriots — C David Andrews (illness), OL Marcus Cannon (ankle), WR Chris Hogan (shoulder) and WR Matthew Slater (hamstring) are out. WR Danny Amendola (knee), TE Martellus Bennett (shoulder/hamstring), DL Malcom Brown (ankle), DE Cassius Marsh (shoulder) and DB Eric Rowe (groin) are questionable.

THE BIG 3

The Raiders are the first NFL team to play their first nine games of a season without recording an interception. Since 1950, only the 49ers have a longer interception-less streak: 10 games spanning the 1976-77 seasons. The Raiders’ defense has allowed the highest passer rating by opposing quarterbacks this season and is about to face Brady, who has 19 touchdown passes and two interceptions in nine games.

According to Pro Football Focus, New England’s defense has allowed 948 yards to receivers who lined up in the slot this season — most in the NFL and nearly double the league average. The Raiders had success lining Amari Cooper up as a slot receiver in Week 7 against the Chiefs, as Derek Carr targeted him 11 times for six catches, 95 yards and a touchdown. There’s a good chance you could see more of that Sunday.

It’ll be interesting to see if either team seems better prepared for the thin air at Azteca Stadium, at 7,280 feet. The Patriots practiced all week at the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, acclimating to the altitude. The Raiders practiced at home in Alameda and flew into Mexico City on Saturday, the same strategy they employed last year before defeating the Texans there.
