Fox-5 viewers in New York were surprised Monday night when Warriors guard Klay Thompson appeared on their local newscast, chatting about a scaffolding collapse in Manhattan.

“I usually observe if the piping and stuff is new,” said Thompson, who was identified on the chyron as “NBA player.” “Sometimes, you know, if something looks like it’s been there a while, I try to kind of avoid that.”

The clip, of course, quickly made the rounds among Golden State fans on Twitter, prompting laughter and selfreflection.

“I really need to rethink how I walk under scaffolding after this,” Marcus Fry said.

“Omg this guy is a treasure we must protect him at all costs,” another user added.

Thompson was asked Tuesday after practice at St. John’s University how the interview came together. Turns out, the interviewer had no idea Thompson was an NBA play made er and didn’t ask his profession. The cameraman was the one who identified Thompson.

“I was walking and she asked me if I wanted to do an interview, and I said, ‘Sure,’ ” Thompson said. “Interesting topic. Unfortunately, people got hurt and I wanted to give my opinion and be an active citizen in the community.

“She asked me about the situation, and I answered it truthfully.”

The Warriors were in New York for a busy off-day after defeating the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday. Stephen Curry an appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s TV show Monday night. JaVale McGee did an autograph signing at the official NBA store.

Famous visitors: Golden State had a couple of notable visitors at practice: Former Warriors teammates Chris Mullin and Mitch Richmond.

Mullin is in his third season as St. John’s head coach, and Richmond is one of his assistants. The two are best remembered in the Bay Area for teaming with Tim Hardaway to form “Run TMC.” Those three players scored a combined 62 points per game in 1989-90, and the following season, each player ranked among the top 11 in the NBA in scoring.

“We love Mullin,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said. “He was wearing his ‘Town’ shirt to represent. It’s fun to come to St. John’s. This is the second time we’ve had practice here. Nice connection.”
