Sounders shut out Dynamo in playoffs

Gustav Svensson and Will Bruin scored in the first half, and the Seattle Sounders beat the 10-man Dynamo 2-0 in Houston in the first leg of the Western Conference finals Tuesday night.

Svensson gave the defending MLS Cup champion Sounders a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute, heading Nicolas Lodeiro’s corner kick just right of the middle from 8 yards out.

Bruin upped the lead to 2-0 in the 42nd minute, heading Joevin Jones’ crossing pass into the left side of the net from 8 yards out.

Lodeiro missed a chance to extend the lead to 2-0 in the 28th minute as his penalty kick was saved by Joe Willis, who dived to his left and batted it. Seattle was awarded the penalty kick after Jones was pulled down from behind in the box by Jalil Anibaba, who was given a red card.

The second leg is Nov. 30 in Seattle.

Toronto FC and host Columbus played to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of the MLS Eastern Conference finals. Toronto goalkeeper Alexander Bono made a save on Harrison Afful in the 85th minute to preserve the tie. Toronto played without Sebastian Giovinco (16 goals, six assists) and Jozy Altidore (15 goals and six assists) because of one-game suspension­s. The second leg of the aggregate-goals series is next Wednesday at Toronto.

Defending champion Real Madrid advanced again to the Champions League knockout stages after beating APOEL 6-0 and Tottenham defeated Borussia Dortmund 2-1 . Besiktas also advanced, drawing with Porto 1-1 to reach the final 16 for the first time. Also in Group G, last season’s semifinali­st, Monaco, lost 4-1 to Leipzig.
