Defensive end Marsh claimed off waivers

For the 49ers, there is good news about sporting a 1-9 record: It puts them in a good spot to grab other teams’ castoffs.

On Wednesday, the 49ers, who have the No. 2 spot in the waiver-claim process, claimed defensive end Cassius Marsh off waivers from the Patriots. The move came two days after the 49ers claimed defensive lineman Sheldon Day off waivers from the Jaguars.

Marsh, a 2014 fourth-round pick by Seattle, was traded by the Seahawks to New England on Sept. 2 for 2018 fifth- and seventh-round picks. In nine games with the Patriots, Marsh made one start and had 19 tackles and one sack. In his career, he has played 46 games (two starts) and had 74 tackles and four sacks.

The 49ers could view Marsh, who is in the final year of his contract, as a strong side linebacker. That position is currently filled by starter Eli Harold and Dekoda Watson. Harold, a 2015 third-round pick, has four career sacks, including one this season.

The Patriots replaced Marsh by signing defensive end Eric Lee off the Bills’ practice squad. Lee, a 2016 undrafted free agent, hasn’t played in a regular-season game. When asked about the decision to waive Marsh, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick told reporters, “We felt like it was the best move to make for the football team.”

The 49ers had an opening on their roster after waiving defensive lineman Datone Jones on Tuesday. They will need to release a player if, as expected, they activate defensive lineman Tank Carradine off injured reserve before Sunday’s game against Seattle. Injury report: Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan said he is expecting defensive lineman Solomon Thomas (knee), wide receiver Trent Taylor (ribs) and tight end George Kittle (ankle) to play Sunday against the Seahawks.

Thomas has missed two games, and Taylor and Kittle missed the 31-21 win over the Giants on Nov. 12 prior to last week’s bye.

“I could tell the week off really helped them,” Shanahan said.

Meanwhile, safety Adrian Colbert, who underwent surgery last week for a broken thumb, did not practice and has a “very small chance” to play against Seattle, Shanahan said. Colbert would likely be replaced in the starting lineup by Antone Exum, who was signed Nov. 7. Proud dad: General manager John Lynch attended the Big Game on Saturday at Stanford, but he wasn’t scouting.

Instead, he was with his son, Jake, a senior linebacker at Cathedral Catholic in San Diego who was on a recruiting visit to Stanford.

“They asked me, ‘Do you want to sit up with all the scouts?’ ” Lynch said. “It was, ‘No, I want to sit with the rest of the recruits,’ because that’s what I was there for.”
