Stanford men into NCAA quarters

-

The Stanford men’s soccer team advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament with a 2-0 win over visiting Coastal Carolina on Sunday. It was the Cardinal’s ninth consecutive postseason shutout, an NCAA record.

Two-time defending national champion Stanford will face top-ranked Wake Forest (191-2), a 2-0 winner over Butler, at 2 p.m. Saturday in WinstonSalem, N.C. Stanford beat the Demon Deacons in a shootout to win the NCAA title last year and beat them in the quarterfinals of the 2015 tournament.

Tanner Beason scored his fourth goal of the year, on a penalty kick, to put Stanford up 1-0 in the 50th minute. Foster Langsdorf finished the scoring in the 90th minute with his 13th goal.

Stanford (16-2-2), ranked No. 2 by Top Drawer Soccer, was outshot 17-15 by Coastal Carolina (14-7-1).

Cardinal goalkeeper Nico Corti recorded the shutout, stopping five shots.

Stanford has won four consecutive Pac-12 crowns, losing just three conference matches in those four years. England: Manchester City beat Huddersfield 2-1 for a club-record 11th straight English Premier League win. City moved to 37 points from 13 games — the highest total ever at this stage of an EPL season. After Huddersfield took the lead, Raheem Sterling was awarded a penalty kick, which Sergio Aguero converted to tie the game. Aguero then completed the comeback by scoring six minutes before the final whistle to give Manchester City an eight-point lead at the top of the table. Elsewhere, Alexis Sanchez’s last-minute penalty kick gave Arsenal a 1-0 win at Burnley and Southampton crushed Everton 4-1. Spain: Lionel Messi made a perfect pass for Jordi Alba’s 82nd-minute goal as Barcelona tied Valencia 1-1 in a matchup of Spain’s top teams. Barcelona remains four points ahead of Valencia. Messi was sure he had opened the scoring in the 30th when Valencia goalkeeper Neto was unable to control his shot and let the ball slip between his legs, but the linesman did not see the ball cross the goal line. La Liga has been loudly criticized for not having video review and is expected to add it next season. Barcelona is eight points ahead of Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. Italy: Napoli moved back atop Serie A with a 1-0 win at Udinese and has a two-point lead over Inter Milan, which won 3-1 at Cagliari. Third-place Juventus beat Crotone 3-0 to remain four points behind Napoli. Title rival Roma was held 1-1 at relegation-threatened Genoa in a match that saw Daniele De Rossi sent off. Germany: Hamburger SV beat Hoffenheim 3-0 for its second straight win at home. Hoffenheim defender Kevin Akpoguma’s own-goal was the league’s 1,000th since it started in 1963.
