Man held in pileup that killed 4, hurt 6
A 47-year-old man arrested after a highway collision killed four people and injured six others was facing felony charges Sunday of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence and hit-and-run, authorities said.
Fred Lowe, a Sacramento resident, was arrested late Saturday after fleeing the scene of a five-car pileup on Interstate 80 at San Pablo Dam Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Four people were killed and six were injured in the crash. The identities of the deceased
are not being released until their families are notified, said Officer Matthew Hamer, a CHP spokesman.
The driver of an overturned white sedan was transported to a hospital, but four other passengers in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, Hamer said.
Three other cars — two sport utility vehicles and another sedan — had varying levels of damage. Some occupants, including a juvenile, were also hospitalized. Their conditions were not immediately available.
Investigators determined a fifth vehicle was involved and had fled the scene based on witness accounts and evidence on the highway.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff ’s Department arrested Lowe after receiving a report of another hit-and-run crash in their jurisdiction.
“Investigations determined he was the driver in our incident,” Hamer said.
It’s unclear whether anyone was injured in the second hit-and-run in Contra Costa County.
Lowe was charged with vehicular manslaughter, felony drinking and driving, and felony hit-and-run, Hamer said.
He is being held at the Martinez Detention Facility. His bail was set at $1.15 million. Sarah Ravani is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer. Email: sravani@ sfchronicle.com Twitter: @SarRavani
