Iwakuma re-signs with Mariners

-

Right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma has agreed to a minor-league contract with Seattle, keeping him with the only organization for which he has pitched in the majors. Iwakuma, 36, made only six starts last season because of shoulder problems that caused him to go on the disabled list in May. Iwakuma had right shoulder-debridement surgery Sept. 27 and is expected to start throwing in late February or early March.

A full postseason share on the World Series champion Houston Astros was worth a record $438,902. The previous mark was $388,606 for the 2014 Giants. Major League Baseball said the players’ pool was a record $84.5 million.

Tampa Bay claimed infielder Micah Johnson on waivers from the Giants. Johnson was designated for assignment last week. Infielder Orlando Calixte, also designated for assignment, cleared waivers, and was sent outright to Triple-A Sacramento.

Pittsburgh claimed left-handed reliever Sam Moll on waivers from the A’s. Colleges: Cal State Bakersfield and UC San Diego will join the Big West Conference in 2020, with Bakersfield becoming a member that year and UC San Diego going through a four-year reclassification to Division I before becoming an official member in 2024.

The additions will give the conference 11 members. Other Big West schools are Cal Poly, Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge, Long Beach State, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara and Hawaii. Soccer: Vincenzo Montella was fired as AC Milan coach and replaced by Gennaro Gattuso. Milan has won only two of its past nine matches.
