Edwards in line for Arizona State job

Former NFL coach Herm Edwards is in line to become Arizona State’s next head coach, pending approval of university president Michael Crow, a person with direct knowledge of the plan told the Associated Press on Wednesday.

Edwards, 63, has not coached since 2008 — when he was fired after a 2-14 season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He last coached in college in 1989, when he was the cornerback­s coach for San Jose State.

ASU athletic director Ray Anderson represente­d Edwards during Anderson’s days as an agent.

Edwards would succeed Todd Graham, who was fired Sunday after six seasons but will stay on through Arizona State’s bowl game.

Washington co-offensive coordinato­r Jonathan Smith has been hired by Oregon State to be the Beavers’ head coach, the school announced .

Oregon State has been in the market for a coach since Gary Andersen stepped down in October after a 1-5 start.

Smith is a former Beavers quarterbac­k who has been working as a QB coach for coach Chris Petersen since 2012, starting at Boise State and following him to Washington in 2014.

“Oregon State University is a special place and I have many memories of being a part of Beaver Nation,” Smith said in a statement. “I played for some of the best coaches I have ever been around and learned many of the qualities I have utilized in my coaching career.”

San Jose State linebacker Frank Ginda (first team), punter Michael Carrizosa (second team) and placekicke­r Bryce Crawford and offensive guard Chris Gonzalez (honorable mentions) were honored as All-Mountain West players.

Ledecky wins Olympic honor

Stanford swimmer Katie Ledecky was named Female Olympic Athlete of the Year by the United States Olympic Committee for the third time

As a freshman during the 2016-17 college season, Ledecky set five American records and seven NCAA records. She then won six medals at the 2017 world championsh­ips in July in Budapest.

“I am very honored and grateful to receive this recognitio­n from the U.S. Olympic Committee and also wish to thank USA Swimming and all of the fans who supported Team USA throughout the year,” Ledecky said in a statement. “Thanks also to my coaches and teammates — all of whom make it such a privilege to compete for Team USA and Stanford.” Soccer: Jozy Altidore scored in the 60th minute and host Toronto FC advanced to the MLS Cup final for the second straight year with a 1-0 victory over the Columbus Crew in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals.

After a scoreless tie in Game 1 last week in Ohio, Columbus needed a win or draw with goals to advance.

Toronto will host the Seattle Sounders or Houston Dynamo in the Dec. 9 MLS Cup final. The Sounders lead the Western Conference final 2-0 going into Game 2 in Seattle on Thursday.

Jed York, the 49ers’ CEO, moved a step closer to becoming a MLS owner after Sacramento was named one of the four finalists for two expansion teams.

Sacramento’s group includes York and Kevin Nagle, a minority owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings.

The Colorado Rapids hired Anthony Hudson, 36, as their coach. The Seattle native spent the past three seasons coaching New Zealand’s national team.

English Premier League leader Manchester City beat Southampto­n 2-1 on Raheem Sterling’s winner in the sixth minute of injury time. Also in EPL play, there were victories for Chelsea (1-0 over Swansea), Arsenal (5-0 over Huddersfie­ld) and Liverpool (3-0 over Stoke). Crime: Beverly Hills police are investigat­ing after someone broke into a home of boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the past week. Police say luggage, sunglasses and other accessorie­s were taken.
