Meulens staying, runner-up in N.Y.

As the Giancarlo Stanton saga continues to rumble slowly, with the Cardinals getting their chance to be heard Friday, the business of baseball marches on. Unfortunately for Giants coach Hensley Meulens, the march will not take him to New York City.

Meulens made a strong impression on the New York Yankees when he interviewed for their managing vacancy, rising to one of two finalists, but The Chronicle learned and several media outlets in New York confirmed that another former Yankees player, Aaron Boone, will get the job.

Boone will replace Joe Girardi, who was fired despite leading the Yankees to an American League wild card.

Meulens will remain in San Francisco in his new job as bench coach after eight years as hitting coach.

Will one of the players on the Giants’ bench be Stanton, the reigning National League Most Valuable Player?

That remained unanswered Friday.

A day after Giants executives met with Stanton’s representatives in Los Angeles, hoping to gauge whether Stanton would accept a trade to San Francisco, the St. Louis Cardinals had a similar meeting Friday.

The Giants and Cardinals are the lone teams known to have submitted formal offers to the Marlins for Stanton, who is believed to be leaning toward the Giants because he wants to play in his home state of California. The Cardinals might have better prospects to send Miami, but the Giants are thought to be willing to take on a bigger chunk of the $295 million left on Stanton’s contract.

Friday also was the deadline for teams to tender contracts to their unsigned 40-man-roster players, and the Giants had no surprises. Their five arbitration-eligible players — relievers Sam Dyson, Cory Gearrin, Will Smith and Hunter Strickland, plus second baseman Joe Panik — all received tenders.

The Giants did non-tender pitcher Albert Suarez, not yet eligible for arbitration, to clear space on the 40-man roster for a player to be added down the road. That makes Suarez a free agent, but the Giants could re-sign him to a minor-league deal if both parties are interested. Henry Schulman is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.
