William Lindley Cooper

-

William Lindley Cooper passed away November 29, 2017, at the age of 92. The son of Corwin and Ruby Cooper, Bill was born in Denver, Colorado, and served in World War II as an officer in the US Navy. He attended UC Berkeley, graduated from Boalt Hall School of Law and worked at the Federal Reserve Bank where he eventually became Associate General Counsel.

It was at “The Fed” that Bill met the love of his life, Mary Jane Shafer, and they were married at Old St. Mary’s Church in San Francisco. Mary and Bill were devoted to each other through 64 years of marriage, and to their three sons, William Jr., George and Robert.

Bill was an active and involved father. He took his children on memorable camping trips, introduced them to the wonders of science and astronomy and to the challenges of the golf course, golf being a major passion. He enjoyed coaching CYO softball, and instilled in his kids an appreciation of literature and music. Bill shared his interest in history and politics with his family, and by example established in them the virtue of civic responsibility.

After his retirement, Bill and Mary traveled to various parts of the country, reuniting with members of their respective families and enjoying the sights and sounds of America. Bill took particular pleasure in visiting New Orleans, home of the traditional jazz that he loved so much.

After his wife Mary passed away in 2014, Bill slowed down considerably but retained his excellent attitude and continued to read voraciously. He was assisted during this time by his family and a wonderful team of caregivers including Conchita Mecano and Amelia Robles.

Strength and gentleness are worthy qualities, and combined with wisdom epitomized the best of William Lindley Cooper. Along with his three children, he is survived by six grandchildren and a host of family and friends who will fondly remember him.

There will be a viewing commencing at 4pm with a rosary at 6pm at Duggan’s Serra Mortuary in Daly City on December 3rd, with the funeral mass on Monday, December 4th at 11am in St. Cecelia’s Church in San Francisco with internment at Skylawn Cemetery.
