HYATT PLACE SANTA CRUZ.

- — Jeanne Cooper, travel@sfchronicle.com

As a replacement for a former church turned eyesore, the new Hyatt Place Santa Cruz may not seem miraculous to locals — but to visitors, it counts as a prayer that’s been answered. Modern, clean and charger-friendly lodging, not to mention national brands, are hard to come by in this funky town. Some initially skeptical neighbors may be won over, too, as the hotel’s 24-hour, valet-only parking keeps cars off the street.

Setting: Off Ocean Street, a few blocks from Highway 17. It’s a five-minute drive and 15-minute walk across the San Lorenzo River to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk or downtown Pacific Avenue, although sketchy areas may make a ride to the latter advisable.

The appeal: Affordable family getaway, with a hint of Santa Cruz style. Surf- and wave-themed art serves as a reminder of the bay, and is visible from upper floors. And though business types may keep the hotel busy on weekdays, the central location, heated pool and hot tub, free themed breakfasts and layout of the 106 rooms — including a “cozy corner” living area with sofa bed — make it attractive for all-ages leisure travel.

Insider’s tips: General manager Julie Baylor, formerly of Hotel Paradox, recommends Assembly on Pacific Avenue for “really great salads” and nearby Soif for ingenious wine pairings, available for every menu item. By day, explore more on one of four free cruiser bikes.

Good to know: The valet-only, underground parking uses lifts to stack cars, but retrieval is relatively quick on weekdays; call 10 minutes ahead on weekends. Rooms with two queen beds offer a shower/tub combo, while king rooms have just the shower.

Details: 407 Broadway, Santa Cruz. (831) 226-2300, https://santacruz. place.hyatt.com. Weekdays from $179, weekends from $190, including taxes and fees.
