James Patrick McCarthy

Jim passed away peacefully on November 28, 2017 at home with his family. His loving wife of 64 years, Mary, predeceased him.

Jim was the only child of Andrew and Ellen McCarthy, born October 22, 1923 in San Francisco. He attended Star of the Sea Grammar School, St. Joseph’s and St. Patrick’s Seminaries. Jim served in the Army, stationed in Korea. He was a San Francisco firefighter for almost 30 years, serving in the Richmond District on Truck 14.

His greatest pride and joy were his seven children: Mary Ellen Lederman, Andrew (Mary Ann), John (Teresa), Jim (Maria), Tim, Kevin (Colleen) and Theresa McGovern (Brian). His much-loved grandchildren and their spouses: Aislinn (Nate), Eddie, Patrick (Jen), Brian (Jess), Michael, Caitlin, Shannon, Sean, Megan (Travis), Jimmy (Kelly), Brendan, T.J., Connor, Dillon (Amanda), Aidan, Morgan, Isabel, Brian, Christopher, Thomas, Stephen, and Lizzie, and his great-grandchildren, Emanuel, Connor, Bizzie, and Ella.

Jim was always active in his children’s schools as Father’s Club President at St. Monica’s and teaching CCD in the parish. He was a member of St. Cecilia’s parish for 48 years and was very active with the Knights of St. Cecilia.

Jim and Mary traveled the US visiting their children and grandchildren. Jim loved to walk especially at Ocean Beach.

The family would like to especially thank Eileen O’Donoghue who assisted Jim and Mary over the last six years. Thank you Catherina O’Dea for the wonderful care. Stephanie, Elaine, Caitriona, and Bernadette - you were a blessing. Thank you Nurse Jackie of Cross Roads for the endless dedication and compassion.

Friends are invited to visit Monday, December 4 after 6:15pm at St. Cecilia Church, 17th Ave and Vicente, San Francisco where a Vigil Service will be held at 7:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, December 5 at 1:00pm at St. Cecilia. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in memory of Dad to St. Cecilia’s Parish and School.
