Oregon promoted offensive coordinator Mario Cristobal to head coach of its football team.

The Ducks made the formal announcement early Friday afternoon. Cristobal was cooffensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Oregon this past season and was named interim coach Tuesday when Willie Taggart left to become head coach at Florida State. Cristobal becomes the 34th coach in Oregon history.

“Mario’s leadership skills, work ethic, and experience makes him a perfect fit to lead the Oregon football program,” athletic director Rob Mullens said in a statement. “He has a passion for Oregon and a vision for our future success, and has made a significant impact on our student-athletes during his time here. We look forward to a great future on the horizon for the Ducks under Mario’s leadership.”

Before coming to Eugene, with Taggart, Cristobal had spent four seasons as offensive line coach at Alabama. He has six seasons of head coaching experience at Florida International, where he went 27-47, including 20-26 in conference, with two bowl appearances from 2007-12.

Receiver James Robinson’s playing days are over at Florida because of a heart condition. The freshman, one of the state’s top recruits last February, will not be medically cleared to return.

Duke kicker/punter Austin Parker was kicked off the team after he was suspended from school for a violation of the university’s academic policy. The redshirt sophomore converted 17 of 21 field-goal attempts and 33 of 35 extra points. He averaged 42.1 yards on 61 punts. Baseball: The Detroit Tigers agreed to a deal with righthander Mike Fiers.

Fiers, 32, made 28 starts and one relief appearance for the Houston Astros this year, going 8-10 with a 5.22 ERA. He struck out 146 in 1531⁄3 innings.

Catcher Chris Iannetta and the Colorado Rockies have agreed to a two-year deal. Iannetta, 34, hit .254 for the Arizona Diamondbacks this year and is a .231 hitter with 124 homers over his career. Golf: Finland’s Tapio Pulkkanen shot an 8-under-par 64 on the Firethorn Course to take a one-stroke lead in the European Tour’s Joburg Open in Johannesburg, South Africa. Pulkkanen had a 14-under 129 total.

India’s Shubhankar Sharma was second after a 61 on the Bushwillow Course. Figure skating: American Nathan Chen held on to his lead from the short program to edge Shoma Uno and win the Grand Prix Final in Nagoya, Japan.

Russian skater Mikhail Kolyada was third.

Kaetlyn Osmond of Canada was first after the women’s short program.
