4 goals in 5 shots help Blues prevail

-

The St. Louis Blues quickly made the most of their limited opportunities. Jaden Schwartz knocked home his own rebound and the Blues scored four times in a five-shot span on the way to beating the Red Wings 6-1 on Saturday in Detroit.

Vladimir Sobotka, Scottie Upshall, Jay Bouwmeester, Brayden Schenn and Dmitrij Jaskin also had goals for the Blues in their third straight victory.

“That really didn’t seem like a 6-1 game,” Bouwmeester said. “We had the lead for most of it, but we weren’t playing great.”

Frans Nielsen scored for Detroit, which has won just once in its past eight games.

Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard continued his struggles of the past few weeks, allowing four or more goals for the fifth time in eight starts.

Shortly after killing off a high-sticking penalty, the Blues opened the scoring at 11:50 of the first period. The Blues made it 2-0 at 4:07 of the second period.

St. Louis made it three goals on three consecutive shots when Upshall got loose on a breakaway to make it 3-0 at 6:17 of the second period.

Avalanche 7, Panthers 3: Nathan MacKinnon and Alexander Kerfoot scored 41 seconds apart in the second period and visiting Colorado snapped a four-game skid. Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson left late in the third with an undisclosed injury. “I think he blocked a shot,” coach Jared Bednar said. “I haven’t talked to the trainers.”

Lightning 4, Jets 3: Brayden Point scored 36 seconds into overtime and host Tampa Bay completed a perfect four-game homestand. Point put back a backhander past Connor Hellebuyck for the win. Winnipeg defenseman Dustin Byfuglien left with a lower-body injury. Golden Knights 5, Stars 3: David Perron, Reilly Smith and Brayden McNabb scored in a span of 3:37 during the second period, and visiting Las Vegas won its fourth in a row.
