San Mateo falls in state title game

- — Tom FitzGerald

Justin Manyweather’s 59-yard punt return in the game’s final minute set up Gerald Hulett’s 1-yard touchdown plunge as Fullerton beat College of San Mateo 16-12 to win the California Community College Athletic Association state championship at Sacramento City College on Saturday.

The Hornets (13-0), who entered the game as the nation’s top-ranked community college team, have won back-to-back state titles.

College of San Mateo (11-2) was forced to punt from its own 14 with 1:06 left, but instead of kicking away from Manyweather — who averaged 18 yards per return this season — the Bulldogs kicked it to him in the middle of the field. He broke through the first line of would-be tacklers, cut left and wasn’t corralled until he’d reached the 1 with 51 seconds to play. Hulett went up and over the middle of the line for his 18th TD on the next play.

College of San Mateo quarterback Miles Kendrick was sacked three times on his team’s final possession to end the game.

The Bulldogs had taken a 12-9 lead with 6:27 to play when wide receiver Jared Latu connected with Rajae Johnson on a 63yard scoring pass.

Bloomgren to coach in bowl game: Mike Bloomgren will continue to serve as Stanford’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in the Alamo Bowl even though he has become Rice’s head coach, he texted The Chronicle.

“I’m wearing 2 hats (or 20 hats) right now,” he said. “I do plan to coach these guys in the bowl. Some of them I’ve known all 7 years I’ve been at Stanford because of recruiting them.

“Couldn’t just walk away when my old boss (David Shaw) and my new boss (Rice athletic director Joe Karlgaard) were both good with me coaching in the Alamo Bowl.”

Bloomgren said tight ends coach Morgan Turner would take on a bigger role in game planning and practice preparations.

The Cardinal (9-4) play TCU (10-3) in San Antonio on Dec. 28.

Army 14, Navy 13: Bennett Moehring narrowly missed a 48-yard field goal in a swirling snow on the final play and Army held off Navy in Philadelphia to win its first Commander-in-Chief ’s Trophy since 1996 (Army went 2-0, also beating Air Force this season). Army (9-3) earned its second straight win over Navy (6-6) following 14 straight losses in the series. Ahmad Bradshaw pushed over the goal line on a quarterback sneak with 5:10 remaining and Blake Wilson kicked the extra point to put Army ahead.

Missouri extends Odom: Missouri coach Barry Odom has been given a two-year contract extension through the 2022-23 season. Odom’s salary will remain at $2.35 million annually.
