Toronto wins 1st MLS Cup title

-

Jozy Altidore opened the scoring in the 67th minute and host Toronto FC beat the Seattle Sounders 2-0 on Saturday in the MLS Cup to become the first Canadian champion in league history.

Toronto avenged a penaltyshootout loss to Seattle last year in the title game.

“Lifting this trophy has been an obsession for the last 364 days, not just for me but for every single guy on our team,” Toronto captain Michael Bradley said. “There’s no other word for it.”

In the 67th, Sebastian Giovinco’s pass from just inside the Seattle half helped Altidore split two defenders. Altidore took a few steps to his left and fired the ball over goalkeeper Stefan Frei.

Victor Vasquez made it 2-0 in injury time from close range after Armando Cooper’s shot rebounded off the post.

Toronto won the title in its 11th season. Seattle was seeking to become the fourth backto-back MLS champion.

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated his fifth Ballon d’Or award as the world’s best player by

scoring two goals in Real Madrid’s 5-0 win over Sevilla, while Valencia kept the pressure on Spanish leader Barcelona by beating Celta de Vigo 2-1. Madrid is in third place.

In the English Premier League, West Ham beat defending champion Chelsea 1-0. Chelsea remained 11 points behind leader Manchester City, which faces second-place Manchester United on Sunday.
