Edmund Murphy

-

Ed passed away peacefully on December 4 with his children and loving wife of 59 years, Mary, by his side. Ed was the oldest child of Mildred and Edmund Murphy, and brother to Dr. Terence Murphy who predeceased him.

A San Francisco native, through and through, Ed attended Sacred Heart High School, (class of 1947), San Francisco State and served in the US Marines, stationed in Korea. He worked for the Department of Public Works for the City and County of San Francisco for 34 years and enjoyed a second career in Real Estate, working for Wiener and Associates. A long time member of Holy Name parish, he was active in the Fathers Club and Knights of Holy Name and volunteered at AlmaVia of San Francisco serving communion to residents where he later resided and received excellent care in his final months. Thanks also to Dr. Damon Lee, Susan M. Longer M.D., Philip B. Sanfilippo II, D.P.M., and Andrew Ko and the staff at UCSF Oncology for their care.

Ed lived his life family first, and he would tell you that his five children and their families were his greatest pride and joy, Colleen (Paul) Doumeng, Kathleen (John) Marshall, Maureen (Greg) Lynds, Dennis and Kevin (Dora). “Papa Ed”, as he was known to his eleven grandchildren, (Danielle, Nicole, Jonathan, Jeffrey, Kiera, Scott, Brad, Kyle, Ryan, Dylan and Caitlyn,) lived his life with love, devotion and a strong faith. Ed is also survived by his brother and sister in law, Dan and Annette Healy and was a loving uncle and cousin to many McDermott, Musante and Healy relatives.

Ed and Mary shared many adventures and, in later years, especially enjoyed frequent trips to visit cherished family members in Ireland, the US Virgin Islands and Southern California. Passionate about all things sports related, Ed was an avid golfer and a lifelong fan of the San Francisco 49ers, San Francisco Giants and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Our beloved dad and grandfather will always be remembered for his strength, love of family, and keen mind. We will miss you Dad…rest in peace.

Friends and family may visit on Wednesday, December 13, after 6 pm and are invited to attend a vigil service at 7 pm at Holy Name of Jesus Church, 1555 39th Avenue, San Francisco. A memorial mass will be celebrated at Holy Name on Thursday, December 14 at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, our family requests donations to Holy Name Parish and School.
