Deep thoughts, cheap shots & bon mots ...

So much for Buster Posey’s aura. Shohei Ohtani, when he met with Giants’ representatives, said he was awed by Posey’s aura. Apparently Posey’s aura can’t carry Mike Trout’s aura’s jock.

Too bad. I kind of liked the idea of St. Buster.

That’s two swinging strikes for the Giants on Friday, but at least they took healthy cuts, at Ohtani and Giancarlo Stanton. Can’t really blame the Giants for not being the No. 1 choice of either guy, except that they would have been a lot more attractive if they had a better team. (See: Catch-22.)

It’s actually OK to start comparing Jimmy Garoppolo with Joe. But not Joe Montana, not until Jimmy G’s got a couple Super Bowls under his belt. The comparisons work better with another Italian Joe from Pennsylvania — Joe Namath. Garoppolo’s got a bit of Broadway Joe’s charm and easygoing cool. If the 49ers do get to the Super Bowl (no, not this season), I can see Garoppolo sitting poolside, hands behind head, regaling reporters, guaranteeing a win.

Nice that Garoppolo has made such an impression on his teammates, coach and GM. But all the we-finally-got-us-a

real-quarterback talk can’t do much for the self-esteem of C.J. Beathard, who took a severe beat-down while holding down the fort until Jimmy G could get up to speed.

Big test Sunday for the Raiders’ defense, the first game against a real quarterback and legit offense since Ken Norton Jr. was fired. But if the Raiders’ D aces the test, who’s going to explain why GM Reggie McKenzie and head coach Jack Del Rio didn’t make the change sooner?

If Bryce Love can finish second in the Heisman voting despite playing half the season on one leg, he’s got to be a person of interest for the 49ers and Raiders.

LaVar Ball pulled his son LiAngelo out of UCLA because the school was taking too long to decide on a punishment for the lad for shoplifting. Says reader Chris Beach, “And all this time I thought ‘He took his Ball and went home’ was just a figure of speech.”

Encouraging outing by Tiger Woods last weekend, except for his third-round 75. That must have been a day when Tiger’s glutes didn’t fire. And you know what they say: If your glutes aren’t fired with enthusiasm, they will be fired with enthusiasm.
