-

Born in Newtown, County Clare, Ireland

Resided in San Rafael, California

Andrew passed away peacefully with his wife and family by his side on December 10, 2017 at Kaiser Hospital, San Rafael. He was born, the youngest of nine children, in Newtown, County Clare, Ireland on April 10, 1934 and raised on his family’s farm. He was the beloved husband of the love of his life, Mary P. Greene, married on February 10, 1968.

He will be greatly missed by Mary; their children Matthew (Jaime), Andrew (Hau), Kathleen, Brendan, and Paul (Brittany); and the grandchildren he adored: Cian, Colin, Anthony, Nolan, Aurelia, and Keira.

Andrew came to America in 1960. He spent three months in Buffalo, then drove west and arrived in San Francisco where he was welcomed by his brother John and sister-in-law Mary. He was a proud member of Carpenters Local 22, a general contractor, and a senior building inspector for the City and County of San Francisco. He was a charter member of the United Irish Cultural Center in San Francisco, having helped build the Center in the mid-70’s. When he moved to Marin, he loved volunteering at the Marin Irish American Club and the Lion’s Club. He had a tireless work ethic and instilled the same in his sons, as well as a love of summer weekends in Cazadero, Irish music, reading books about politics and history, and going “home” to Ireland.

After his retirement, Andrew enjoyed walks at McInnis (and Northgate on rainy days), the weekly farmers’ market, relaxing in the sun on his back deck, home improvement projects, and being with his growing family for special occasions and weekly dinners. Andrew loved singing Irish songs to his grandchildren and watching them rake, then jump in, the leaves in his backyard.

Andrew was a very generous man, and was always putting the needs of others before his own. He was devoted to caring for his daughter, Kathleen, disabled since birth, giving her kisses on the hand, feeding her and watching Western movies and Giants games together.

He is survived by brothers Anthony (Margaret) of Buffalo, NY; Matthew (Peggy) of Newtown, Ireland; Patrick (Marie) and Benignus (Joan) of the Bay Area; brothers- and sisters-in-law John Keane (Jackie) and Dominic Keane (Breeda) of the Bay Area; Bridget Doris (John) of County Laois, Ireland; Geraldine McNamara (Michael), Kathleen Foley, Helen O’Connell, and Patrick Keane (Margaret) of County Clare, Ireland. He was predeceased by his brothers John and Michael, sisters Moira and Sr. Bridget, sister-in-law Mary Greene, and brotherin-law Patrick Foley. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews both here and in Ireland.

Mary gives special thanks to the doctors, nurses and medical staff at Kaiser ICU, especially Dr. Sinnott, Dr. Prasad, Dr. Bellani, Dr. Brow, and Dr. Stamps.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Marin Ventures; thank you.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Isabella’s Church, San Rafael Saturday December 16th at 12:30 pm.
