The 6-furlong allowance event — a prep for the Lost in the Fog Stakes on Feb. 19 — also attracted Many Roses and Mal Verde. Many Roses is making his first start since finishing third in the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile on April 29. … Mended, who won all 10 starts after trainer John F. Martin claimed her Jan. 6, tied for the most victories by a North American thoroughbr­ed in 2017. Cantchaco, who raced at minor tracks in Oregon and the Intermount­ain West, won 10 of 16 starts in 2017 but earned only $31,959 compared to Mended’s $186,620. Martin said Mended’s next start could be either the Grade 3, $400,000 Houston Ladies Classic on Jan. 28 at Sam Houston Park or an open allowance Feb. 3 at Golden Gate Fields. If she wins, she will equal the record of 11 straight victories by a Bay Area-based horse set by Hap Logue in 1973. … Trainer Jerry Hollendorf­er finished seventh nationally in earnings with $9,542,402 in 2017 and 11th in winners with 174 — his fewest since 1987. Chad Brown led in earnings with $26,202,164 and Karl Broberg led in wins with 412. Martin finished tied for 25th in wins with 124. … The final two grass races until late March are scheduled for Sunday, but rainy weather could move them to the main track.
