William Wurster built the four-bedroom in Point Richmond.
William Wurster is known as one of California’s premier architects and a pioneer of modernist design. In 1939, he built 229 Bishop Ave. in Richmond, a four-bedroom finished with tall ceilings, grand volume and scenic vistas in all directions.
“Wurster built simple, woodsy, unadorned buildings whose beauty depended on proportion, scale and an honesty of materials,” said Shenna Moe of Paragon Real Estate Group, who is listing the Bishop Avenue home for $1.55 million. “He created larger-than-expected volumes and luminous living spaces. He displayed brilliant site planning, allowing outdoor spaces to blend seamlessly with indoor ones.”
Though the home was built decades ago, Wurster’s influence remains prominent. The residence retains the shape of its butterfly roof and the rustic wood design he helped make famous. And inspiring views remain at the site Wurster personally selected.
“Astute observers will notice that the house is designed to create artful shadows as the sun moves across the sky and light streams through it,” Moe said.
The home boasts a solar heated pool, a sauna and a studio guest house. The 0.27acre lot has hosted weddings and large gatherings in the garden. Once home to former Assemblyman John T. Knox, the residence has hosted a variety of political events over the years.
Redwoods and pines planted in the 1930s pepper the landscape, and the grounds feature two levels of patio and garden space.
