L’AUBERGE DEL MAR

- — Jeanne Cooper

When Del Mar Racetrack’s horse racing season begins, so does the stampede for rooms at L’Auberge Del Mar, a posh nook in Del Mar. Winter is ideal for appreciating the hotel’s trifecta of outstanding dining, recently refreshed lodging and relaxing spa.

Setting: Nearly hidden below busy Camino Del Mar’s cafes and boutiques and above 15th Street Beach, home to a pocket park and surf break.

The appeal: Cozy coastal enclave. Orange County designer Barclay Butera has updated his original casual chic design for the 121 guest rooms — many with balconies or patios, fireplaces and ocean and pool views — to add more beach hues. Chef de cuisine Jeff Ginther artfully executes the seafood- and veggie-focused menu at Kitchen 1540 (one of several on-site restaurants), while the surf-inspired Spa L’Auberge offers a sunny outdoor lounge with fire pit.

Insider’s tips: Try the cranberry fennel Saison — or the next seasonal brew from executive chef Nathan Lingle and Viewpoint Brewing — in the Living Room Bar. Nearby, Beesalt Balcony serves grilled Mediterranean fare with superb pita and an ocean view.

Good to know: The bell desk can arrange valet service to 15th Street Beach and local shuttles within 1 mile. The daily resort fee of $39 includes use of Electra beach cruiser bicycles and two tennis courts (plus gear). Dogs are welcome for $125 per stay.

Details: 1540 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar. (858) 259-1515, reservations (844) 875-5256; www.laubergedel mar.com. Weekdays from $354 and weekends from $379, including fees and taxes.
