2 Deep freeze: The storm that hit the East Coast with frigid, windwhipped snow and ice held its cold grip on the region Saturday. The temperature in Burlington, Vt., sank to minus 1, with a wind chill of minus 30 degrees. Across the state line in New Hampshire, the Mount Washington Observatory was tied with Armstrong, Ontario, as the second coldest place in the world at minus 36 degrees. More seasonable conditions are expected early this week across the region, with temperatures forecast in the high 30s.

3 Architecture preservation: The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy is trying to prevent a commercial building in Whitefish, Mont., designed by the famed architect from being demolished. The conservancy based in Chicago is looking for someone to pay $1.7 million for the former medical center. The brick building was designed by Wright in 1958, a year before he died. The conservancy has been working with the Montana Preservation Alliance and other groups.

4 Machete attack: Police say a man in Shelburne, Vt., used a machete to attack a woman in her 70s as she delivered meals to a motel being used as housing for the homeless. Abukar Ibrahim, 32, is accused of attacking the 73-year-old Meals on Wheels volunteer who was dropping off meals Friday at Harbor Place, which serves as an emergency housing center. The woman was hospitalized with multiple injuries and later released. Police said Ibrahim barricaded himself in a room after the attack before coming out and being detained.

5 Water forecast: Rocky Mountains snowpack that feeds Colorado River water supplies was 20 percent below average in December in some areas, prompting a prediction that the key water source for seven U.S. states could flow at around half its average volume during the April-July snowpack runoff. The conditions reported by the National Weather Service’s Colorado Basin River Forecast Center in Salt Lake City could improve if more snow falls, but winter precipitation so far has been far below normal. The river is a critical water source for Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming. Lake Mead’s surface has dropped more than 130 feet since drought descended on the Colorado in 2000. But the lake that sits upstream from Hoover Dam east of Las Vegas ended 2017 almost 2 feet higher than a year ago, as use of Colorado River water by Nevada, Arizona and California hit its lowest level since 1992.
