Arizona to hire Sumlin as head football coach

-

A person familiar with the decision says Arizona will hire former Texas A&M head football coach Kevin Sumlin.

Details of a five-year contract to replace Rich Rodriguez as head coach of the Wildcats were still being finalized. Rodriguez was fired Jan. 2 amid sexualharassment allegations.

Sumlin, 53, was fired after six seasons at Texas A&M in November and reportedly had been in the mix for numerous jobs, including Arizona State. The Sun Devils hired former NFL head coach and ESPN analyst Herm Edwards.

Texas A&M went 51-26 and went to a bowl game every season under Sumlin, but the Aggies were 25-23 in SEC play and did not match his first season in College Station, when they were 11-2 with Heisman Trophy quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Texas A&M hired former Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher to replace Sumlin.

Sumlin also spent four years at Houston, going 35-17, including 12-1 in 2011.

Washington running back Myles Gaskin will return to school for his senior season rather than enter the NFL draft.

Gaskin announced his decision in a brief statement on Twitter, the day before the NFL deadline for eligible underclassmen to declare for the draft. Gaskin was expected to be a mid- to late-round selection in what’s expected to be a strong running back class.

Hall of Fame ump Harvey dies at 87

Doug Harvey, one of 10 umpires enshrined in the baseball Hall of Fame, died Saturday. He was 87.

The Hall said that Harvey had been in hospice care in Visalia.

Harvey umpired in the National League from 1962 through 1992, and was a crew chief for 18 of his 31 seasons. He worked in five World Series, six All-Star Games and 4,673 games in the regular season.

His plaque at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., noted that “his knowledge of the rules and no-nonsense control of the game led players to refer to him as ‘God.’ ”

Harvey is survived by his wife, Joy; his brother Nolan; his sons Scott and Todd; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Dan Gurney, the first driver to win in Formula One, IndyCar and NASCAR, died from complications of pneumonia in Newport Beach (Orange County). He was 86.

Gurney began racing in 1955 and won in nearly every racing series he attempted. He drove for Ferrari, BRM, Porsche and Brabham in Formula One, then formed his own team. He won the Belgian Grand Prix in 1967 in his own car, the first and only time an American won an F1 race in a car of his own design.

Gurney teamed with A.J. Foyt that year to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Ford GT40, and he’s often credited with starting the tradition of spraying Champagne from the podium at that race.

Gurney retired from driving in 1970 with 51 victories, including four in Formula One, seven in IndyCar and five in NASCAR. Soccer: Manchester City’s quest to be the second “Invincibles” of English soccer ended, thanks to nine minutes of madness in a 4-3 loss at Liverpool.

Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored for Liverpool, which is tied for second with Chelsea and Manchester United, 15 points behind City.

Luis Suarez scored twice and Lionel Messi completed Barcelona’s 4-2 comeback win at Real Sociedad in the Spanish league. At the halfway point of the season, Barcelona is unbeaten and nine points ahead of secondplace Atlético Madrid.
