Three people were injured early Monday in a shooting on Interstate 280 in San Francisco that resulted in the closure of all southbound lanes for several hours, authorities said.

Officers received reports of shots fired about 2:50 a.m. on the interstate near the Alemany Boulevard exit, said Officer Vu Williams of the California Highway Patrol.

Within minutes, officers also received word that an Escalade with three gunshot victims arrived at San Francisco General Hospital, Williams said.

There were five people in the car, but only three were injured, he added.

“We started to put things together,” Williams said. “We were able to collect a bunch of shell casings out on the freeway itself.”

Investigators determined that another motorist began shooting at the Escalade full of passengers, but the motive is unknown, Williams said.

“That’s what we believe,” Williams said. “None of the five claimed that they saw anything or know anything about it. It is what it is.”

The three victims have non-life-threatening injuries.

There was no information released about suspects, and no arrests were made.

Traffic was stopped on all southbound lanes and drivers were diverted off the freeway at Alemany Boulevard. All lanes were reopened by 7:15 a.m.
