Young scores 48; No. 4 Sooners fall

Trae Young had a sinking feeling when his final shot left his hand.

The freshman point guard scored 48 points, but he missed a deep three at the buzzer in overtime as No. 4 Oklahoma fell 83-81 at Oklahoma State on Saturday.

“I knew it wasn’t going to go in,” he said. “No, I didn’t feel comfortabl­e.”

Young, who leads the nation in scoring, had 34 points after halftime.

Young missed 25 of his Big 12 Conference-record 39 shots and was 8-for-20 on three-pointers. No other player for Oklahoma (14-4, 4-3) scored more than eight.

“We’ve got to work harder on getting more motion away from the ball and get the ball moving a little bit,” Oklahoma coach Lon Kruger said.

Young has been drawing comparison­s to Stephen Curry. The Warriors star did not score more than 44 points in a game while at Davidson.

Jeffrey Carroll had 23 points and 13 rebounds and Kendall Smith added 20 points for Oklahoma State (13-6, 3-4 Big 12). Smith’s three with eight seconds left in regulation tied it at 73.

#1 Villanova 81, Connecticu­t 61: Jalen Brunson scored 23 points and Donte DiVincenzo added 17 for the visiting Wildcats (18-1), who improved to 13-0 against nonconfere­nce opponents. Jalen Adams scored 19 for the Huskies (10-9), who have lost five games this season by at least 20 points. #3 Purdue 87, Iowa 64: Carsen Edwards scored 22 points and Vincent Edwards had 19 to lead visiting Purdue (19-2, 9-0 Big Ten) to its15th straight win. Luka Gazra had 19 points for the Hawkeyes (10-11, 1-7). #5 Duke 81, Pittsburgh 54: Wendell Carter Jr. had 21 points on 9-for-10 shooting and fellow freshman Marvin Bagley III added 20 points as the host Blue Devils (17-2, 5-2 ACC) beat the Panthers (8-12, 0-7). #6 West Virginia 86, Texas

51: Jevon Carter scored 22 points and led a big secondhalf run that propelled the host Mountainee­rs (16-3, 5-2 Big 12) past the Longhorns (12-7, 3-4). James Bolden added 19 points, Daxter Miles Jr. scored 15 and Sagaba Konate had 10 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks for West Virginia, which lost its previous two games.

Houston 73, #7 Wichita

State 59: Rob Gray scored 24 points, and the host Cougars beat a top-10 team for the first time in 22 years. Wichita State (15-4, 5-2 American Athletic Conference) shot a season-low 33 percent. Houston (15-4, 5-2), blown out by Wichita State two weeks earlier, changed its game plan to focus on three-point defense. Iowa State 70, #8 Texas Tech 52: Freshman Cameron Lard scored 18 points and the Cyclones (11-7, 2-5 Big 12) handed the Red Raiders (15-4, 4-3) their second straight loss to an unranked foe on the road. #10 Kansas 70, Baylor 67: Malik Newman scored seven of his 24 points in the final minutes, Baylor turned the ball over on the last inbounds play and the Jayhawks rallied to beat the visiting Bears (12-7, 2-5 Big 12). Kansas (16-3, 6-1) trailed 67-61 with 2:05 to go before Newman’s scoring binge. #11 Xavier 73, #19 Seton Hall 64: J.P Macura scored 27 points and the Musketeers (18-3, 6-2 Big East) dealt the Pirates (15-5, 4-3) their first loss at home by rallying from a 10point second-half deficit. #12 Cincinnati 86, East Carolina 60: Jacob Evans and Kyle Washington each scored 17 points and Gary Clark had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the host Bearcats (17-2, 6-0 American Athletic), who have won 10 straight. #15 North Carolina 80, Georgia Tech 66: Luke Maye had 17 points and 11 rebounds, and Theo Pinson added 11 points and 10 rebounds for the host Tar Heels (16-4, 5-2 ACC). Josh Okogie scored 18 for the Yellow Jackets (10-9, 3-3). #17 Auburn 79, Georgia 65: Bryce Brown scored 28 points and the host Tigers (17-2, 5-1 SEC) rallied in the second half to beat the Bulldogs (12-6, 3-4). Mustapha Heron had 14 points for Auburn, which came out flat for the fourth straight game and trailed by 16 points late in the first half. Florida 66, #18 Kentucky 64: Jalen Hudson came off the bench to score 17 points as the visiting Gators (14-5, 6-1 SEC) rallied. Florida trailed 56-53 but regrouped down the stretch behind Chris Chiozza’s threepoint­er, Kevarrius Hayes’ jumper and Keith Stone’s layup to go up 62-58 with 2:02 to go. Kentucky (14-5, 4-3) lost for the third time in five games. #20 Clemson 67, Notre Dame 58: Gabe DeVoe hit a crucial three-pointer with 3:18 to go and scored 17 points as the host Tigers (16-3, 5-2 ACC) got their first-ever win over the Fighting Irish (13-7, 3-4). TJ Gibbs scored 18 for Notre Dame, which lost its fourth straight. #21 Tennessee 70, South Carolina 63: Lamonte Turner scored 25 and the visiting Volunteers (13-5, 4-3 SEC) pounded the ball inside to get by the Gamecocks. Tennessee outscored South Carolina 32-16 in the paint, getting both of the big men for South Carolina (12-7, 3-4) into foul trouble. #22 Ohio State 67, Minnesota 49: Keita Bates-Diop had 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Buckeyes (17-4, 8-0) in the first

part of a two-sport Big Ten doublehead­er at Madison Square Garden in New York. At night, Minnesota and Michigan State met in hockey. Kansas State 73, #24 TCU 68: Dean Wade scored 20 points for the host Wildcats (14-5, 4-3 Big 12), who were coming off a win over No. 4 Oklahoma earlier in the week. Vlad Brodziansk­y had 15 points for the Horned Frogs (14-5, 2-5).

Duke loading up: Zion Williamson is going to Duke. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound forward from Spartanbur­g, S.C., is the nation’s second-rated high school player by ESPN. He gives Duke the three highestrat­ed prospects, according to ESPN, along with No. 1-rated R.J. Barrett and Cam Reddish. WOMEN #4 Baylor 75, Kansas State 70: Kalani Brown had 33 points and 19 rebounds and Lauren Cox scored 16 with 19 rebounds as the host Bears (17-1, 7-0 Big 12) beat the Wildcats (11-8, 3-5). #9 Texas 90, Texas Tech 39: Ariel Atkins scored 22 points and Brooke McCarty had 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists to help the Longhorns (15-3, 6-1 Big 12) beat the host Red Raiders (7-12, 1-7).
