Extravagant Tiburon trilevel

Bay views at Pacific Heights-style six-bedroom

- By Jordan Guinn

When Lauren Kowal first entered 7 Hillcrest Road in Tiburon in March 2010, she was in awe of the millwork, bay views and parquet hardwood flooring. She and her husband were the first to move into the newly finished Pacific Heights-style residence, and the couple raised their children in the extravagant six-bedroom home.

“The house is very dramatic and elegant, but also comfortable and incredibly livable,” she said.

Offering more than 5,500 square feet of living space, the home enjoys a wealth of fine finishes and amenities. The trilevel offers three zones of radiant heating and an elevator that services all levels. A terrace behind the home provides an ideal place for outdoor entertaining, and large windows showcase the Marin County surroundings.

“There are so many windows and the house gets so much natural light,” she said. “You wake up in the morning and the house is already lighting up. It’s a great house to wake up to.”

The home opens to a dramatic foyer with a grand staircase and divided light windows. Parquet hardwood flooring lines the rooms throughout the main level, and the family room offers a coffered ceiling with recessed lighting. Built-in shelving provides a place to display art and curios, and a fireplace anchors the room.

An oval tray ceiling with intricate molding adorns the dining room as wide millwork envelops the space. A glass door connects the dining room to a rear patio with built-in heaters. Floor-to-ceiling walnut shelving finishes a library accented by hardwood moldings. Like the dining room, the library opens to the rear patio and outdoor living area.

The Kowals installed this patio and added coliseum steps that descend to a lawn and wooden play structure.

“Our children would run around and play down there, and there’s direct views of the bay,” Kowal said.

A baronial fireplace anchors the living room, a spacious public room that opens to the outdoors on three sides. This segues to a chef ’s kitchen with high-end appliances, white cabinetry, stone counters and a breakfast area. Large windows welcome natural light into the kitchen and frame views of the surrounding landscape.

Four bedrooms, including the owner’s suite, occupy the upper level. The owner’s suite enjoys bay views, a gas fireplace and a spa bathroom with a soaking tub and walk-in shower.

Built-ins and beverage refrigerators accent a guest suite found on the lower level.
