Kevin C. Malone

May 30, 1956 - December 14, 2017

Kevin was born in New York City, but considered himself a San Franciscan first and foremost. He lived in many different neighborhoods during his lifetime including Excelsior, Outer Mission, Bernal Heights, Richmond, Noe Valley, Polk Gulch, Russian Hill, and Downtown. He knew literally thousands of San Franciscans from all walks of life. He was educated at local public schools and first became involved in public affairs as a participant in student government at Washington High School where he won awards for extemporaneous speech and debate. He was a long-time friend of radio commentator John Rothman who is also President of the Washington High Alumni Assn.

He continued his political involvement at City College of San Francisco where he was a founding member of the Harvard on the Hill Democratic Club. He became a lifelong member of the Democratic Party and he also strongly identified with the Irish Republican movement, a family tradition. His father Charles “Chuck” Malone was incarcerated in Federal Prison for his role in supporting the Provisional IRA. Kevin was a member of the Na Fianna Eireann and never forgot his roots in the Irish Republican movement.

Kevin began working on local campaigns in the early 1970s when he worked as a “sign guy” and was one of the top “snipers” in the City. He became well known as an advance man for various campaigns including Jimmie Carter, Alan Cranston, Tom Bradley, Fritz Mondale and Michael Dukakis as well as Bill Clinton. Locally he supported campaigns for Joseph Freitas, Terrence Hallinan, George Moscone, Mike Hennessey, Dianne Feinstein, Jack Molinari, Fiona Ma and many others.

He supported himself by working as an office administrator, building engineer, residence manager and electronics salesman. But his life was politics. He enjoyed the cinema and the Giants but he was most in his element at Democratic campaigns, conventions, club meetings & caucuses. He rubbed elbows with the famous (and “wannabes”). Two of his proudest moments were his participation in the 1984 Democratic Convention at Moscone Center for the Mondale Campaign and the visit of Nelson Mandela at the Oakland Coliseum.

Kevin was an active grass roots Democrat who once ran for the Democratic County Central Committee. He was a member of various clubs including the Central City Democrats, the SF Democratic League and was a founder of the former District 8 Democrats (Excelsior-Portola-Visitacion Valley). Most recently, he served on the executive boards of the Irish-American Democratic Club and the Franklin D. Roosevelt Democratic Club.

He is survived by siblings Maureen Lehane Malone, Katherine Fulks, Sean Malone and Brian Malone. He is also survived by Sweetie, his beloved cat. He was predeceased by his parents.

In his later years Kevin was plagued by complications from diabetes, resulting in a leg amputation. He learned to accept his limitations and remained active in the community until his death.

Slán sean-chara - b’fhéidir go mbeadh do chosán leathan, d’fhéadfadh do chuid Trioblóidí a bheith taobh thiar de tú féin agus síocháin a bheith leat. an chuid eile i gcumhacht
