After 11 years of a hardfought battle with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, Jim succumbed with courage and grace. He never once complained, always remained positive in the face of mounting challenges, and inspired everyone fortunate enough to know him with his embracing warmth and vibrant soul.

Jim was born in San Francisco, CA to Ruth Evelyn Alsop and Reed Frank Trimble. He graduated from Riordan High School in 1960 before attending University of San Francisco (USF) from 1960-64, earning a bachelor’s degree in Political Science. Jim joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1961, completing Officer Candidate School in 1963. He then attended USF law school for two years and was called to active duty, served three years including a tour in Vietnam, and reached the rank of Captain.

Jim met the love of his life, Janie Del Fava, at the Surry Inn in 1961 and they married in August of 1966. He took over the Village Market in 1974, establishing one of the Bay Area’s most successful independent grocery stores. He was active in the California Grocers Association (CGA) and a founding member of Raise the Bar, an independent grocery owners group. Jim was honored by CGA as grocer of the year in 2002.

Jim’s proudest achievement remains his family, with four of the most loving and accomplished children who have all gone on to contribute greatly in the Bay Area community. For many years, he coached his children in soccer and basketball. Jim loved to go backpacking, fly fishing and travel the world with Janie. He was known locally as an avid cyclist and swimmer, and in later years, walking religiously around the streets of Piedmont. For 30 years, Jim was a private pilot who always looked forward to taking his family on vacation to Montana, Wyoming and Mexico. Jim stayed in contact with everyone by supporting their passions and always remembering the significant events in their lives.

Jim is survived by his loving wife Janie of 51 years, his four children Alex Trimble (wife Michelle and daughter Charlotte) of San Francisco, Joseph Trimble of Oakland, Keith Trimble (wife Kari and children Cole and Bryson) of Lafayette and Claire Bryant (husband Nick and children Jackson and Kaitlyn) of San Ramon and his sister Barbara of Incline Village. He was predeceased by his parents Ruth and Reed Trimble.

Jim will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

There will be a private celebration of life at the end of January. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Jim’s name to the following groups: Alpha-1 Foundation (www.alpha1.org) or the US Marine Corp Scholarship Foundation (www.mcsf.org).
