NCAA investigates UConn basketball

-

The NCAA is investigating the Connecticut men’s basketball program. University President Susan Herbst said the school will cooperate in a “thorough and transparent manner reflective of the model athletic and academic institution we continually strive to be.” The university didn’t specify the allegations and said it would have no further comment, but would “address and respond appropriately as the inquiry moves forward.”

Connecticut Media reported the probe with unidentified sources who said the inquiry relates to recruiting.

This is not the first time UConn has been under NCAA scrutiny. Then-coach Jim Calhoun was forced to sit out three games during the 2011-12 season and the school was put on three years of probation after the NCAA found violations dating to 2008. UConn then failed to meet NCAA academic qualifications for the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

Missouri fired softball coach Ehren Earleywine, saying the school lost confidence in his ability to foster a “healthy environment” for players. The Tigers were 482-182 in Earleywine’s 11 seasons, reaching the Women’s College World Series three times. Earleywine was investigated by the school in May 2016 amid accusations that players were verbally abused. Courts: A Louisiana jury found Ronald Gasser guilty of manslaughter in the 2016 shooting death of former NFL running back Joe McKnight. Gasser shot McKnight after what prosecutors said was a road rage incident that included aggressive driving. Baseball: The Giants traded minor-league infielder Engelb Vielma to the Orioles for a player to be named or cash.

Free-agent outfielder Lorenzo Cain and the Brewers finalized an $80 million, five-year deal. NHL: Buffalo defenseman Zach Bogosian will miss the rest of the season after it was determined he requires hip surgery. Soccer: Alexis Sanchez set up goals for Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera in a lively debut as Manchester United won 4-0 at fourth-tier Yeovil in the FA Cup fourth round. High schools: Two more suburban Dallas high school boys soccer players were arrested on sexual assault charges stemming from hazing allegations. That makes five Forney High players charged. One 18-yearold is charged as an adult. Skiing: Switzerland’s Wendy Holdener won a World Cup combined race in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, by a big margin and set herself up as the favorite for Olympic gold next month. First-run leader American Lindsey Vonn finished fourth.
