Fowler shares lead at Phoenix Open

-

Rickie Fowler took a share of the lead into the weekend in the Phoenix Open. He knows from experience the party is just starting.

“Just keep the gas pedal down,” Fowler said.

Fowler has had success at TPC Scottsdale without winning. He finished a shot behind Hunter Mahan in 2010, lost to Hideki Matsuyama on the fourth extra hole in 2016 and tied for fourth last year.

“From the first couple times I played it, I knew it was just kind of a matter of time before I would win here,” Fowler said. “I know I can win here. I put myself in position plenty of times.”

Fowler was tied with Bryson DeChambeau, each shooting a second straight 5-under-par 66.

Daniel Berger and Chez Reavie were a stroke back. Berger had a bogey-free 65. Reavie is the only player without a bogey after two rounds.

Matsuyama withdrew because of a left wrist injury, ending his bid to match Arnold Palmer’s record of three straight victories in the event.

Lee Westwood sank 11 birdies in a round of 10-under 62 to sit one shot behind the leaders halfway through the Maybank Championship, an event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, sanctioned by the European and Asian tours. Phachara Khongwatmai and Nino Bertasio shared the lead.

Minjee Lee shot 6under 67 to take a threestroke lead after two rounds of the Vic Open on the Ladies European Tour in Barwon Heads, Australia. Cheyenne Woods, niece of Tiger Woods who was a stroke off the lead after the first round, dropped way back after shooting a second-round 80. Tennis: Sam Querrey fought from a set down to defeat Laslo Djere and John Isner won a fifth-set tiebreaker over Dusan LaJovic to give the United States a 2-0 lead over host Serbia in the first round of the Davis Cup World Group. Querrey had 20 aces in the opening singles and Isner followed with 24 aces in his victory in the late match.

Richard Gasquet beat Robin Haase of the Netherlands 6-4, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 7-5 as host France tied its Davis Cup first-round match at 1-1.

Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki lost to Daria Kasatkina 7-6 (2), 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the St. Petersburg (Russia) Ladies Trophy. Obituary: Olympic sprinter Cliff Bourland, America’s oldest living gold medalist, died at 97 of complications from pneumonia in Santa Monica. He won gold at the 1948 London Games while running the second leg of the 1,600meter relay.
