Clayton Nelson Kambic

Clayton “Clay” Nelson Kambic was born in Oakland, CA on July 24, 1928 and passed away quietly on January 31, 2018 in his home in Redwood City, CA. His daughter, Christine “Chris” Kambic Neary was at his side along with his son-in-law, John Neary, of Las Cruces, NM. Clay’s wife of 46 years, Elizabeth “Liz” “Betty” Riach Kambic, passed away in November 2016. Clay leaves behind great-grandson Jason Daniel Kambic, greatgranddaughter Angelique Kambic; grandsons Jason Neary (Sacramento, CA) and Brian Neary (Burke, VA) and their families; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Clay’s career as a police officer began with eleven years with the Oakland Police Department, during which time he served as an undercover vice operative, and also on their award-winning motorcycle drill team which performed throughout the state of California.

Clay then joined the California Highway Patrol and was assigned to San Mateo County until his retirement, participating in such projects as the partnership with SFO Helicopters tasked with the removal of all “abandoned” vehicles in the County. He was also a member of the Tactical Squad, called into critical situations on many occasions.

After retiring from law enforcement, Clay was a Court Officer, worked a window at Bay Meadows Racetrack, and enjoyed the job as a “Go-fer” for the San Francisco 49ers Organization for years.

Besides being a Forty Niner Faithful, Clay was an avid golfer, organizing numerous tournaments in the area for the benefit of local charities and youth groups. He also loved fishing, including deep-sea and diving for abalone.

Clay truly had a heart of gold; always helping someone else. He was a devoted friend, father, son, and husband — a very sharp dresser and loved to dance. He was known and loved by many in the Bay Area, and will be sorely missed. Go with Much Love, Clay!
