USF men, women defeat Santa Clara

Frankie Ferrari scored 19 points and Jordan Ratinho added 17 to lead USF past host Santa Clara 70-59 on Saturday.

Ferrari and Ratinho combined to shoot 14 of 23 from the field and Matt McCarthy added 12 points for the Dons (13-12, 5-7 WCC).

KJ Feagin’s layup trimmed Santa Clara’s deficit to 58-57 with five minutes left, but Ferrari countered with a three-point play and the Broncos (8-16, 5-7) were 1-for-10 from the field from there.

Feagin had 15 points and Henry Caruso scored 12 for Santa Clara.

New Mexico 71, San Jose State 68:

Antino Jackson scored 17 points to lead four Lobos in double figures as visiting New Mexico (12-12, 7-4 Mountain West) sent the Spartans (3-19, 0-11) to their 11th consecutiv­e loss. Ryan Welage (22 points) had a chance to tie the game, but missed a 35-foot shot as time expired. “I got a good look,” Welage said. “It was a really good look. I just clanged it off the rim.” Jaycee Hillsman added 21 points and 11 rebounds for San Jose State, whose 25 turnovers led to 30 points for the Lobos.

WOMEN USF 64, Santa Clara 47:

Anna Seilund and Michaela Rakova each scored 14 points as the host Dons (11-12, 6-6 WCC) beat the Broncos (7-16, 3-9). USF used a 17-0 first-quarter run to build a double-digit lead, led by 14 at halftime and its cushion did not shrink below that figure in the second half. Kyla Martin’s 13 points led Santa Clara.

St. Mary’s 66, San Diego 57:

Megan McKay scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds to lead the host Gaels (15-8, 8-4 WCC) past the Toreros (12-11, 5-7). St. Mary’s, which led by six points at halftime, saw its lead cut to four early in the third quarter before a 15-2 run over a 4:20 span of the period put the Gaels firmly in control. Stella Beck (15 points), Madeline Holland (12) and Sydney Raggio (12) helped St. Mary’s shoot 56 percent from the floor. Aubrey Ward-El had 15 points for San Diego.

New Mexico 92, San Jose State 62:

Jaisa Nunn had 30 points and 11 rebounds as the host Lobos (18-6, 6-5 Mountain West) dealt the Spartans (6-16, 3-8) their fifth consecutiv­e loss. Analyss Benally scored 14 points and Taylor Turney added 13 to lead San Jose State. The Spartans saw the game get away as New Mexico went on a 14-0 run to take a 36-17 lead in the second quarter.
