Arthur Niles Carpenter
November 20, 1954 - January 25, 2018
Arthur Niles Carpenter was born in Berkeley to parents Fred and Betty Carpenter. Growing up in an academic family, Art had the opportunity to study abroad in Paris and graduate from Leysin American High School, Switzerland. He spent every summer with his family at their cabin in Silver Lake, Lassen National Forest where he became an accomplished sailor and fisherman.
A jack of all trades, from ski instructor to carpenter, Art settled on a career in law graduating from Golden Gate University Law School. Displaying his diverse interests, Art practiced immigration law in San Francisco and later personal injury and criminal defense in the East Bay and then Sonoma County. While living in the East Bay, Art was an active member of the Eagles Fraternal Order, enjoyed playing softball and was an accomplished billiards player.
He moved to Santa Rosa in 1998 with wife Elena Herdman and son Christopher. Art loved fishing in Bodega Bay on the New Sea Angler. Travelling to Europe, Canada, Hawaii, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama and cruising to the Caribbean, Western Mediterranean and Alaska rounded out an adventurous life.
In addition to his wife of 33 years and son Christopher (Amber), Art leaves his granddaughter Audrey, step grandson Elijah, sisters Sarah (Bob Newman), Carol (Huseyin Yaman), brother Nathaniel (Lori), many nieces and nephews, and sisters in law (Anita, Carmen and Connie) and brothers in law (Alex, Reggie and Larry).
Special thanks to Memorial Hospice and dear friend Rex Miller for easing Art’s passing. Art’s life will be celebrated at a scattering in Bodega Bay and Silver Lake by family.
Donations may be made in his name to the American Liver Foundation.
