Casual living in Marina district
Southern light floods reimagined contemporary
David Armour is quite comfortable in the Marina district.
Not only does the principal of David Armour Architecture keep his office there, his portfolio contains more than 35 designs in the neighborhood on the northern shore of the city.
Armour has designed or redesigned four homes on Rico Way alone. A fifth comes in the form of 59 Rico Way, which will be finished later this year. For now, one of Armour’s designs, 31 Rico Way, is on the market for $6.2 million.
“Having a lot of experience in one area gives us deep understanding of a neighborhood’s core design principles,” Armour said. “We take inspiration from the original houses and bring a modern lifestyle into them.”
Contemporary and casual, the four-bedroom at 31 Rico Way offers an open floor plan and more than 4,000 square feet of living space. Wideplank white oak flooring spans the interior. Built-in speakers allow music to flood the great room. A skylight opens over the home’s dramatic wood and glass staircase.
The glass-enclosed wine cellar serves as a focal point of the main level, drawing eyes to the floor-to-ceiling glass enclosure that doubles as a piece of functional art.
Calacatta marble counters and an island with waterfall edges accent a dramatic chef ’s kitchen that serves as the heart of the main level. Here, dual dishwashers lend function to the space equipped with warm wood cabinetry and a custom exhaust hood. The adjoining breakfast room is surrounded with windows on three sides and opens to a covered terrace.
“Kitchens aren’t just kitchens anymore,” Armour said. “They are the core of the home now.”
Downstairs, the ground level includes a bedroom and a media room with collapsible glass doors opening to a south-facing turf lawn and raised garden.
Terraces await on the northern and southern sides of the home on the upper level. The owner’s suite opens to the south-facing terrace that looks out at the neighborhood. This suite also features a two-sided fireplace that warms the sleeping quarters and the spa bathroom draped in Calacatta marble.
