Thome says no to Chief Wahoo

-

Newly elected Baseball Hall of Famer Jim Thome won’t be enshrined with Chief Wahoo.

Thome played most of his career with the Cleveland Indians and “fully” supports the team’s decision to remove the divisive Wahoo logo from its uniforms. He prefers to have the club’s block “C’’ logo on his Cooperstown plaque.

The Wahoo logo will be removed from jersey sleeves and caps starting in the 2019 season, when Cleveland hosts the AllStar Game.

Houston closer Ken Giles and Tampa Bay shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria won their salary arbitration cases, while Toronto closer Roberto Osuna has lost.

Giles got a raise from $555,100 to $4.6 million — $400,000 more than Houston’s offer. Hechavarria, who made $4.35 million last year, was awarded $5.9 million, instead of the $5.35 million offered by the Rays. Osuna, also eligible for arbitration for the first time, will make $5.3 million after asking for $5.8 million. Track and field: The American quartet of Crishuna Williams, Raevyn Rogers, Charlene Lipsey and Ajee Wilson set a world record in the 4x800-meter relay at the 111th Millrose Games in New York. Their time of 8 minutes, 5.89 seconds topped the mark of 8:06:50 set by the Russian team of Aleksandra Bulanova, Ekaterina Sharmina, Elena Kotulskaya and Anna Balakshina on Feb. 18, 2011.

Lolo Jones finished seventh in the women’s 60-meter hurdles in 8.37 seconds, three weeks after she was passed over for a spot on the U.S. bobsled team for the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.

Jones was in the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics (100-meter hurdles) and 2014 Winter Olympics (bobsled).

Vashti Cunningham, daughter of retired NFL quarterback Randall Cunningham, tied a meet record of 1.96 meters in the women’s high jump.
