Ocean Film Fest announces lineup
Kate Webber’s “Kim Swims,” about Kim Chambers’ historic 2015 Farallon Islands-to-San Francisco trek, should be one of the highlights of the 15th annual International Ocean Film Festival that runs March 8-11 at the Cowell Theater, Fort Mason.
Billed as “the biggest ... of its kind in North America,” the festival features ocean-themed films by independent filmmakers, including four world premieres, two U.S. premieres and two West Coast premieres. Also scheduled are 39 shorts, features and documentaries, some only 1 minute long (“Shark Wedding,” “68 Voices”).
Among the documentaries, Executive Director Ana Blanco calls attention to “Lionfish — New Pirates of the Caribbean” (a German look at how ecosystems are affected by the quick, venomous predator), “Albatross” (Chris Jordan’s doc took more than 10 years to make) and “The Islands and the Whales” (concerning how Faroe Islands natives’ reliance on whales makes them vulnerable to industrial pollution from far away).
On Saturday, Feb. 10, there will be a fundraising gala at the Pearl in San Francisco.
The $250-per-person dinnerand-dancing bash (dress code: “Hipster cocktail attire”) includes an auction and a guest appearance by Louie Psihoyos, the Oscarwinning director of “The Cove.”
