‘Falsettos’ revival among highlights of SHN lineup.

- By David Wiegand

If you’ve been wishing you were in New York to catch recent hit revivals of “Hello, Dolly!” and “Falsettos,” those shows, other revivals and national tours of Broadway hits are on the horizon as part of the SHN 2018 season, announced Tuesday, Feb. 6.

The new season reflects Broadway’s love of revivals, with national tours of “Falsettos,” “Hello Dolly!” and “Miss Saigon,” as well as “Come From Away,” “Anastasia,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “A Bronx Tale.” In addition, the season will include a return visit of the multi-award-winning musical “Hamilton” in February 2019. Season subscribers will get first crack at tickets to the Lin-Manuel Miranda megahit, which was here last year.

The season opens with Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of “Miss Saigon,” Oct. 4-Nov. 18, at the Orpheum Theater.

Next up will be “A Bronx Tale,” Nov. 27-Dec. 23 at the Golden Gate Theater. The musical is based on Chazz Palminteri’s story and co-directed by Robert De Niro and Jerry Zaks.

The Tony nominee for best musical “Come From Away” is the story of 7,000 passengers stranded in Newfoundland the week after 9/11. Christopher Ashley, winner of the best director Tony, will helm the touring production, opening at the Golden Gate on Jan. 8 and continuing through Feb. 3.

Bette Midler followed in the footsteps of Carol Channing, Pearl Bailey and others when she starred in Jerry Herman’s enduring “Hello, Dolly!,” and now Bernadette Peters is still packing them in in New York. The touring production of the revival will land at the Golden Gate from Feb. 19 to March 17, 2019. No casting announcement has been made, but the show won the Tony for best revival of a musical in June.

The touring company of James Lapine and William Finn’s “Falsettos,” whose revival was nominated for five Tonys last year, will move into the Golden Gate from March 19 to April 4, 2019.

Roald Dahl’s “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is the basis for the musical with songs from the original film as well as new tunes from the composers of “Hairspray.” The Golden Gate will host “Charlie” from April 16 to May 12, 2019.

The new musical “Anastasia,” based on the classic film, will be staged at the Golden Gate from Sept. 3 to 29, 2019.

The SHN 2018–19 season is available for renewing members now. Beginning on March 13, new season subscriptions will go on sale at www.shnsf.com or by calling SHN Audience Services at (888) 746-1799 (press 2). Season prices range from $315 to $890.
