Swansea steamrolls to 4th-round win
With a club-record 8-1 defeat of Notts County in the FA Cup, Swansea offered further evidence of its revival under new manager Carlos Carvalhal.
Huddersfield was another winner in the fourth-round games, beating second-tier Birmingham 4-1 after extra time to set up a final-16 meeting with Manchester United — three days after losing at Old Trafford in the Premier League.
Carvalhal has masterminded wins for Swansea over Liverpool and Arsenal in recent weeks to lift the Welsh club out of the Premier League’s relegation zone.
In the other match Tuesday, third-tier Rochdale beat second-tier Millwall 1-0. Baseball: Minnesota Twins right-hander Ervin Santana will miss the start of the regular season after undergoing unexpected surgery on his right middle finger.
The Twins announced the 35-year-old right-hander had the procedure done Tuesday in New York by Dr. Charles Melone, after experiencing discomfort during a bullpen session last week. Santana is expected to need 10 to 12 weeks of rehabilitation before he can pitch in a major league game, which would keep him out of the rotation until at least mid-April.
Santana, an All-Star last year, was 16-8 with a 3.28 ERA and started in the AL wild-card game, which the Twins lost at Yankee Stadium.
Second baseman Jonathan Schoop and the Baltimore Orioles have agreed to an $8.5 million, one-year contract.
Infielder Darwin Barney has agreed to a minor-league contract with the Texas Rangers that includes an invitation to major-league spring training. College football: USC head coach Clay Helton has received a contract extension through the 2023 season after leading the Trojans to their first conference title since 2008. USC has a 21-6 record in the past two seasons under Helton. Including two stints as interim coach in 2013 and 2015, Helton is 27-10 at USC . ... Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn will make at least $49 million over the next seven years under his new contract.
