USF men edged at BYU in OT

TJ Haws scored 26 points with seven assists, Yoeli Childs had 20 points and nine rebounds and BYU beat USF 75-73 in overtime on Saturday in Provo, Utah.

Souley Boum scored the Dons’ final 13 points of regulation, including two free throws with 39.3 seconds left for a sixpoint lead. But USF turned it over on an inbounds pass and Jahshire Hardnett completed a three-point play with 13.4 seconds remaining. Boum got behind the defense for a fast-break layup for a 65-62 lead, Elijah Bryant tied it on an open three from the wing, and Frankie Ferrari’s contested runner at the buzzer was off the mark.

In overtime, Boum turned it over on a baseline drive with 26 seconds left and Haws was fouled on a reach-in well beyond the arc with 4.3 seconds to go, making two free throws. Ferrari’s three was no good at the buzzer.

Bryant added 14 points and 11 rebounds with four steals for BYU (20-7, 9-5 WCC).

Boum scored 21 points for USF (14-13, 6-8). Ferrari added 16 points with six assists.

Santa Clara 70, San Diego

64: KJ Feagin had a careerhigh 32 points on 14-of-21 shooting and the host Broncos rallied from 11 down to beat the Toreros. Feagin scored the go-ahead points on a layup to make it 64-62 with 1:03 left. Santa Clara (9-17, 6-8 WCC) made all six of its free throws in the final 25 seconds to secure the win. San Diego (16-10, 7-7) had the largest lead of the game at 38-27 on the first basket of the second half. Santa Clara outscored San Diego 17-2 over the next eight minutes and extended to its largest lead at 55-46. But San Diego scored 10 straight to take the lead and the game then went back-and-forth until the final minute. Henry Caruso added 12 points for Santa Clara.

Colorado State 90, San Jose

State 79: Nico Carvacho had 26 points and 20 rebounds as the host Rams beat the Spartans. Colorado State (11-16, 4-10 Mountain West) suspended interim head coach Steve Barnes hours before the game and assistant coach Jase Herl took his place, helping the team snap a seven-game slide while extending San Jose State’s skid to 12 games. Barnes took over on Feb. 3 when head coach Larry Eustachy was placed on administra­tive leave. The Rams pulled away with an 11-0 run to make it 71-59 and followed with a 10-2 run. The Spartans (3-20, 0-12) got 23 points from Keith Fisher III.

USF 76, BYU 73: At Memorial Gym, the Dons rallied from four points down in the second overtime as Shannon Powell hit two free throws and a three-pointer to give USF (13-12, 8-6 WCC) the lead for good. Michaela Rakova led USF with 25 points, Anna Seilund had 21 and Powell scored 18. Cassie Devashraye­e’s 29 points led the Cougars (14-11, 9-5).

San Diego 51, Santa Clara

40: Maya Hood’s doubledoub­le (14 points, 12 rebounds) helped the host Toreros (14-11, 7-7 WCC) beat the Broncos. Santa Clara (7-18, 3-11), which cut a 15-point deficit to one early in the fourth quarter, was led by Charise Holloway’s 19 points.

Colorado State 73, San Jose

State 66: A comeback bid by the host Spartans, cutting a 20-point deficit to five late in the game, fell short. Myzhanique Ladd and Taylor Turney each scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures for San Jose State (6-17, 3-9 Mountain West). Hannah Tvrdy had 22 points for the Rams (18-7, 10-4).
