Daniel Henry Power
A fourth-generation Californian, Daniel Henry Power passed away peacefully on February 1, 2018 at the age of 85.
Born on July 10, 1932 to Henry and Myrtle Power, Dan grew up in Glendale, California. He moved to the Bay Area to attend UC Berkeley, where he was a member of Sigma Phi fraternity and rowed for Cal crew. After graduating with a B.S. in Civil Engineering, he served as a Specialist Third Class in the Army and then became a partner with James V. Power in Power Construction, later PowerAnderson Construction, Inc., a public works engineering firm based in Mountain View.
After Dan married Dorothy Margaret Fadness in 1956, the couple settled in Palo Alto where they raised four children. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for decades and later joined the Unitarian Universalist congregation of Palo Alto.
An avid outdoorsman, Dan loved fishing, hiking and backpacking, especially in the high Sierra; he braved the John Muir Trail and was the senior hiker on the Tahoe Rim Trail inaugural trek in 2001. Community-minded, he was involved in numerous social and environmental initiatives, notably Boy Scouts of America, Habitat for Humanity and the Sierra Club. His openness and interest in people included an embrace of other cultures, which he shared with his family through participation in a number of international youth exchange programs and travels abroad.
Dan is survived by his sister Patricia Power and his four children, Susan Power, Linda Lopez, Laura Alvarado and Tom Power, as well as six grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will take place on Friday, March 23 at 3:00 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto, 505 E. Charleston Rd.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dan’s memory to either the Sierra Club or Friends of Cal Crew.
