Virginia “Ginny” Kiely

Ginny, a San Francisco Native, passed away January 4, 2018 at the age of 94, surrounded by her family. Ginny was the daughter of Joseph and Alice O’Hanlon.

Ginny graduated from George Washington High School and S.F. City College. As a young adult she played women’s softball for Sherry’s All-Stars and Bradford Welch Florist teams in S.F. Ginny worked as a Playground Director in San Francisco and later as a Teacher Aide for San Mateo Foster City School District. Ginny was a volunteer softball coach for St. Gregory’s, Hillsdale HS and Bobby Sox in San Mateo.

Ginny moved to San Mateo in 1949. She is the beloved wife of the late John P. Kiely, whom she married in 1950. Together they raised their five children in San Mateo. A loving wife and mother, she leaves a beautiful legacy through her family. Ginny is survived by her brother Joe Hanlon (Jan); children John (Linda), Carolyn, Jim, Kathy (Cole), and Laurie; grandchild­ren Jennifer, Sean, Joliene, Tanya, Carrie, Danny, Casey and Brendan; and greatgrand­sons Lucas and Korbin. She was predecease­d by her sister Gloria.

She was an avid Giants fan and enjoyed keeping up with local sports teams. Ginny took pleasure in documentin­g and sharing her family history. She cherished spending time with her family and planning gatherings and reunions. Ginny will be missed greatly and leaves nearly a century’s worth of love and stories with her family.

Family and friends are invited to a Memorial Mass at 11am on Friday, February 23, 2018 at St. Gregory Catholic Church, 28th & Hacienda St., San Mateo. Donations preferred to St. Jude Children’s Hospital (stjude.org) or Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (jdrf.org)
