CHARLES DESMARAIS’ ART PICKS

-

“Art and Vinyl: Artists & the Record Album From Picasso to the Present”: A Josef Albers record jacket that looks like how the percussion on the LP inside must sound: That’s just one of the terrific, mostly rare objects in this lighthearted review of designs by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Sophie Calle, Jean Dubuffet, Marlene Dumas, Yves Klein, Barbara Kruger, Sol LeWitt, Chris Ofili, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, Andy Warhol and many others. Free. Through March 3. Fraenkel Gallery, 49 Geary St., Fourth Floor, S.F. (415) 981-2661. https://fraenkelgallery.com

Sarah Morris: Morris is an exciting abstract painter who has received wide notice, but this is her first West Coast exhibition. A long and confounding film in the lower-level gallery will require attention if you want the full treatment, but the gutsy, vivid paintings are worth the visit on their own. Free. Through Feb. 17. Berggruen Gallery, 10 Hawthorne St., S.F. (415) 781-4629. www.berggruen.com

Robert Rauschenberg: “Erasing the Rules”: An expansive exhibition that makes clear why the artist was one of the most influential of the latter half of the 20th century. Through March 25. San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, 151 Third St., S.F. (415) 3574000. www.sfmoma.org

Deborah Roberts: “Uninterrupted”: Collage is a powerful medium in the hands of a skillful artist, with a history that crosses boundaries of the political and the surreal. Roberts lures us into her pictures, suggesting they may describe pretty little girls. Then, she lays out her demands. Free. Through March 17. Jenkins Johnson Gallery, 464 Sutter St., S.F. (415) 677-0770 www.jenkinsjohnsongallery.com

“Salon: Ray Mack and Sarah Sarchin”: Presented “salon-style” with pictures packed floor to ceiling on one wall, the exhibition sometimes hints, sometimes whacks you over the head with references to the depiction of women within the history of art. Free. Through Feb. 23. Bass & Reiner Gallery, 1275 Minnesota St., S.F. www.bassandreiner.com
