NEWS OF THE DAY
From Across the Nation
1 Camper gored: A man camping on Southern California’s Catalina Island was gored in his arm by a buffalo, authorities said. Los Angeles County sheriff ’s officials said the man was sitting on a log Saturday evening and the buffalo was grazing nearby. When the buffalo came closer, the man tried to move away but the animal charged, said Sgt. Ray Ward. The man was airlifted to a hospital on the mainland. Buffalo roam freely on the back side of Catalina Island, where there are campgrounds. Ward says it’s very rare for them to attack humans.
2 Debris death: A man died when a piece of debris from a fire escape fell from a New York City building and struck him on the head, authorities said. Richard Marchhart, 58, died Saturday from a skull fracture he sustained the day before, police said. He was walking on Broadway in Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood when the debris hit him. A worker was inspecting the fire escape seven stories when a piece of it broke off. Police and the city Buildings Department are investigating.
3 ‘Panther’ box office: Already a popculture milestone, “Black Panther” is now a smash at the box office. The Marvel superhero film blew past expectations, with $192 million in ticket sales in North America over the weekend, according to estimates Sunday. That makes “Black Panther” the fifth-biggest opening weekend ever, not accounting for inflation. “All hail the King of Wakanda!” declared the Walt Disney Co. The Burbank studio forecasts a four-day holiday weekend of $218 million in the U.S. and Canada.
4 Heating aid: The Trump administration is once again calling for the complete elimination of low-income heating assistance. And once again, program supporters are pledging to fight it. The administration is using the same arguments from a year ago when it tried to abolish the program, saying it’s rife with fraud and that no one would be left freezing if the program goes away. Those allegations were widely discredited a year ago. President Trump ultimately funded the program this winter after his original proposal encountered resistance from Congress. The president’s 2019 budget also would cut other social programs like federal housing assistance and food stamps.
5 Transgender teen: A transgender Ohio teen’s grandparents have been granted custody and will be allowed to decide whether the 17-year-old can pursue hormone therapy at a hospital after he’s evaluated by a psychologist, a judge in Cincinnati has ruled. The legal battle pitted the teen and his maternal grandparents against his parents, who denied he was transgender and sought Christian-based therapy for him. The teen, with his grandparents’ support, wants treatment at the transgender program run by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The judge called on the state Legislature to consider enacting laws that provide a “framework” for juvenile courts in Ohio to evaluate a minor’s “right to consent to gender therapy.”
