Stanford finishes sweep of Fullerton

-

The Stanford baseball team, under new head coach David Esquer, passed its first test of the season by sweeping a three-game series from visiting Cal State Fullerton.

Andrew Daschbach’s two-run triple highlighted a four-run first inning Sunday as the ninthranked Cardinal beat the 11th-ranked Titans 6-5.

Freshman reliever Austin Weiermiller got the win in his first appearance with four scoreless innings.

Stanford’s Brandon Wulff went 3-for-3. Baseball: The Boston Red Sox re-signed infielder Eduardo Nuñez to a one-year, $6 million contract with a player option for 2019. Nunez, 30, batted a career-high .313 with 33 doubles and 12 home runs over 114 games last season between the Giants and Boston. He was acquired from San Francisco on July 25 for minor-league right-handers Shaun Anderson and Gregory Santos.

The Los Angeles Angels signed former A’s first baseman Chris Carter and former A’s outfielder Chris Young. Carter, one season removed from leading the NL with 41 homers for Milwaukee in 2016, got a minorleague deal with an invitation to spring training Sunday. Young agreed to a one-year contract.

Cleveland manager Terry Francona rejoined the team after the death of his father, former majorleague player John “Tito” Francona, who died Tuesday at age 84 at his New Brighton, Pa., home. Softball: Kiana Pancino turned in Stanford’s first no-hitter since 2014 as the Cardinal defeated Army 12-0 in five innings at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at Cathedral City (Riverside County). Tennis: New No. 1 Roger Federer won his 97th career title, overpowering an ailing Grigor Dimitrov 6-2, 6-2 at the ABN AMRO World tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Petra Kvitova continued her remarkable comeback by beating reigning Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Qatar Open final. Kvitova, 27, won her 13th straight match and second consecutive title. She has six wins over top-10 players in 2018. The Czech, who beat top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki in three sets in the semifinals, will return to the top 10 in the world Monday for the first time since she was the victim of a knife attack in her home in December 2016 that led to a lengthy layoff.

Top-seeded Kevin Anderson won the first New York Open, beating No. 2 seed Sam Querrey 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (1) for his fourth career ATP Tour title. Track and field: Christian Coleman broke the world indoor record in the 60 meters in 6.34 seconds to win his first U.S. title in the final event of the USA Track & Field Indoor National Championships in Albuquerque. He pulled away from former champion Ronnie Baker, who finished with a personal best of 6.40.
