College Park alum has perfect game
Joe DeMers, a College ParkPleasant Hill alum, pitched the first perfect game in Washington history and just the fifth by a Pac-12 pitcher as the Huskies beat UC Riverside 8-0 in the first game of a doubleheader in Seattle om Saturday.
DeMers, who threw a perfect game for College Park in 2015, struck out nine and reached a three-ball count only once in throwing Washington’s first no-hitter since Tim Lincecum and Nick Hagadone combined for one in 2006. DeMers needed just 84 pitches.
DeMers has not allowed a run through 15 innings in his two starts this year. Football: Quarterback Blake Bortles, who led the Jacksonville Jaguars to the AFC Championship Game, signed a threeyear, $54 million deal with the team that will keep him under contract through the 2020 season. The deal includes $26.5 million guaranteed.
The Jaguars announced the move a day after handing out two-year extensions to top executive Tom Coughlin, coach Doug Marrone and general manager Dave Caldwell. Motor sports: Kevin Harvick led 137 of 163 laps for his fourth NASCAR Xfinity Series victory in the past six years at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Harvick finished ahead of Joey Logano and Christopher Bell. Logano started second and Bell was on the pole. Harvick won the first two stages. Soccer: Lionel Messi gave another masterful performance and Luis Suarez scored a hat trick to lead Barcelona in a 6-1 rout of Girona in the Spanish League. Barcelona has won a club-record 32 league matches in a row.
Messi raised his leagueleading goal total to 22 goals as Barcelona increased its lead to 10 points over second-place Atletico Madrid, which visits Sevilla on Sunday.
Hertha Berlin ended Bayern Munich’s 14-game winning run across all competitions in a 0-0 draw in the Bundesliga.
