Mendel Milton (Mickey) Goldberg
August 4, 1924 - January 30, 2018
Mickey died holding hands with his adoring wife and loving son and daughter on the night of a brilliant super blue moon eclipse. He was 93. Known for his sharp intelligence, sense of humor, kindness, generosity and full enjoyment of life, he was greatly loved by his family and admired by friends. After serving in the navy and graduating UC Berkeley, he joined the family business, Dependable Furniture Manufacturing Company (now called DF/m), originally started by his father Joseph (Yussel) Goldberg in San Francisco in 1927. When Mickey became president, and with a skilled and talented team, he expanded the firm for national and international distribution. He was appointed to the Board of Furniture and Bedding for the State of California. His parents, Joe and Ida, were both immigrants from Poland, and his Jewish heritage and identity were deeply important to him. Mickey contributed extensively to a wide range of progressive causes, particularly social justice issues, wildlife preservation and environmental protection. He loved reading, playing tennis, going to the Fromm Institute for Lifelong Learning, talking politics, playing cards, going to the opera, ballet, symphony, theater & movies, watching sporting events, hiking in the High Camps of Yosemite (for almost 45 years), taking trips with friends, and traveling worldwide. He was married 68 years.
Predeceased by his sister, Blossom Becker, Mickey is survived by his wife Jean, son Jack, daughter Judy, granddaughters Ruby, Lo, Sarah, grandson Forest, daughter-in-law Solange Zanetti, son-in-law Thayer Carter and by his stepgranddaughters Rosie and Molly Carter.
A celebration of Mickey’s life will be held at The Racquet Club in Hillsborough March 25th. Contributions can be sent to the Fromm Institute, ACLU, or any environmental protection agency.
