VINTAGE HOUSE AT THE ESTATE YOUNTVILLE

- — Jeanne Cooper, travel@sfchronicle.com

The term “vintage” is often simply a euphemism for “old.” But in the case of the Vintage House at the Estate Yountville, it means pairing the essence of Napa Valley’s rustic heritage with an appeal to modern travelers.

Originally called Vintage Inn, the house underwent a recent redesign that kept wood-burning fireplaces and brick exteriors, yet happily swept away dated elements for a more stylish, contemporary look with a few retro touches. The new Vintage may be pricier, but — like Napa wines — merits the splurge. Setting: A 22-acre spread that includes two hotels, a spa and shops, yet blends in easily with Yountville’s low-rise cottages and high-demand restaurants — French Laundry, Bouchon and Hurley are steps away. The appeal: Wine Country farmhouse with sophisticated flair. The light-filled Great Room lobby sets the tone with a travel trunk-style front desk under wine-crate panels; arriving guests receive a complimentary cocktail, glass of wine or local beer. Whimsical framed art hangs above tall leather headboards in the brightened guest rooms, which feature velvet furniture in neutral hues, modern light fixtures and spa-style marble bathrooms. Private cabanas line the sunny new pool deck, while the remodeled Spa Villagio’s five couples’ suites offer even more private oases with hydrotherapy tubs, fireplaces and indoor and outdoor lounging areas. Insider’s tips: Don’t miss Food Network star Michael Chiarello’s two excellent dining options in adjacent V Marketplace. At sit-down Bottega, try the shaved Brussels sprouts salad with lemon and egg; stop by casual Ottimo for pizza, beer tasting and a variety of handcrafted provisions.

Good to know: The nightly $25 resort fee includes a buffet breakfast in the Groezinger Estate next to the lobby, valet parking, Wi-Fi, turndown service and the welcome drink. The 112-room Villagio Inn & Spa, also on the Estate Yountville campus, is undergoing wide-scale renovations and reopens as Hotel Villagio in March.

Details: 6541 Washington St., Yountville. (800) 351-1133, www.vintagehouse.com. Weeknights from $339, weekends from $510, including resort fee and all taxes.
