Tula M. Gallanes

Tula M. Gallanes, a 54 year resident of Riverside, California, reposed peacefully, on March 2, 2018, in Moraga, California. She was 92 years old, having celebrated her birthday on March 1st.
Born in 1926 in Oakland, California to George and Helen Marakas, she had a very close relationship with her younger sister, Anna. Their family was among the first parishioners of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, on Brush Street in Oakland.
She graduated from Oakland High School in 1944, and matriculated to San Francisco State University where she earned her B.A. degree, with a major in education and minor in music. Thereafter, she joined the Oakland Unified School District as an elementary school teacher. She later earned her Master’s Degree in School Administration from S.F.S.U, as well.
She married Dr. Odyssea Gallanes in 1963 and relocated permanently to Riverside, California. She and her husband were parishioners of Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church, members of the Shrine and Eastern Star organizations, and she participated in the American Association of University Women (AAUW.)
She served, from 19891995, with distinction as the President of the Philoptochos (women’s philanthropic organization) of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco, under the spiritual leadership of Metropolitan Anthony, of blessed memory.
We remember her for her love of God, love for her family, devotion to His Church, and generous spirit. She is predeceased by her loving husband of 54 years, Dr. Odyssea Gallanes. She is survived her sister, Anna Marakas Counelis; nephew, Hon. Steven and Stacia Counelis, Anna and Christos; nephew, Dr. George and Sophia Counelis, Demetrios and Demosthenes. All services to be held at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Ascension, 4700 Lincoln Avenue, Oakland, CA 94602. Trisagion Service at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 2018. Funeral Service at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. Entombment Mt. View Mausoleum, Oakland.
