Walter Paul Oberg

August 1, 1924 - February 22, 2018

-

Walter was the youngest child born to Emil & Mary Oberg on August 1st, 1924 in San Francisco. He is the baby brother to the late Florence, Frances, Emil (known to most as Brud) and his surviving, loving sister, Alice (late Ray). Uncle to the late Tom Masini (late Colleen) and Great Uncle to Tom & Colleen’s three daughters, Adrienne MasiniMariscal (Sal), Alison and Alexis.

Walter attended Balboa High School and at the age of 17, his mother had to sign for him to go into the service. Walter served our country in the US Navy through World War II. Coming back to the states, he didn’t finish school, but joined the Bricklayer’s Union where he worked in San Francisco and San Mateo Counties for many years. After, he decided to start his own business as a bricklayer. His talented work can still be seen at local homes & businesses of his family & friends.

Walter loved to travel & sail. He had his own sailboat named the KANDU. He belonged to the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco where he was a proud member and spent many weekends watching yacht racing and sharing stories of great times with his friends. He traveled the world and saw everything he wanted to see. He made many friends along the way too, but it was in Daly City where his sister, Alice, introduced him to what was to be another great love of his, Anna Marie Burns. Walter & Anna were great partners and stayed together until her passing.

Walter was an avid sports fan, a true fan of the SF Giants, SF 49ers, and Stanford football. He had so much knowledge of life: from the tough times growing up, the war years, of almost all sports, of traveling and of politics. He always had an incredible story to tell, or a current topic to discuss. Being such a gentle and kind person, he was never short on people to talk with, no matter where he was. He had and made friends everywhere he went.

Walter passed away at his home on February 22nd, just months shy of his 94th birthday, after a tough but short battle with cancer. His stories and gentle voice will be missed by many.

Visitations are on Wednesday, March 7th starting at 3 pm at Duggan’s Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave., Daly City, with a prayer service to start at 7pm. Funeral Services will begin at Duggan’s on Thursday, March 8th at 11:30 am, with the burial to follow at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, 1500 Mission Road, Colma.
